@Ashish, according to the website, you should be able to unlock it without an account if you bought it at the noncommitment price… So no, you don’t need an account, they just make it really difficult for you if you don’t have an account…. =/ even when calling the US number, you have to ask for an agent twice through the automated message system before you can talk to a real person who works with you to unlock it.

@Davinder- U need an current ATT or old account its the new Eligiblilty For Unlock.
@Akash- the unlock is for Good. You can even try iOS 6

it’s funny how so many people are asking for help unlocking from overseas. the fine print actually states you do NOT need an AT&T account, although AT&T makes it nearly impossible to contact them without calling them up, and even then they’re a pain if you don’t have an account. The funny thing is they probably get a cut anyhow since they’re advertising the phones. What’s really annoying is that when you have bought a phone without a commitment, maybe while on vacation or something, they still need you to show proof of purchase via fax (isn’t fax bit outdated??) from fricking overseas!!! i mean i understand all the people trying to commit fraud and everything, but geez, there should be something between Apple and AT&T that allows one to tell the other, yes that IMEI was purchased without commitment…

SGomez and jordan, I won’t be contacting AT&T for anybody to try to get your phones unlocked. You need to have an AT&T account or get the person who did to call. I did this for a person to whom I sold my iPhone 4.

Akash, the unlock is permanent if you do it by getting AT&T to tell Apple to unlock it via iTunes as described in this blog entry.

I have called AT&T they have given me a resolution date April,24,2012. Have to wait n see that they have in store for me… Will keep you’ll posted.
